August in Houston brings the heat in more ways than one — it’s a prime time to indulge at local restaurants for a great cause. Houston Restaurant Weeks runs August 1 through September 2 and this is the first year that Katy Malaysian restaurant Phat Eatery at 23119 Colonial Parkway is participating. The special dinner menu showcases some of the most prized Malaysian street food dishes — making it a unique entry among Houston Restaurant Week choices. Dinner is $35 per person and each meal generates a $5 donation to the Houston Food Bank. That equals 15 meals for those in need.

At Phat Eatery, we focus on fresh ingredients and an array of spices to deliver high-flavor dishes for a variety of palates and dietary preferences. Our four-course Houston Restaurant Weeks menu includes variations for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners so everyone can feel included and have a delicious meal. The first course features choice of three types of Roti Canai, which is an Indian flatbread. The vegetarian version is served with a bright and savory curry dip, the Roti With Chicken includes tender and moist boneless curry chicken, and Roti With Beef features one of our signature and most-loved dishes: beef rendang. The flatbread serves a perfect vehicle for sopping up dips and sauces and sets the tone for the flavors to come.

Our second course options include Satay with choice of beef, chicken, or the vegetarian/vegan-friendly tofu served with a crisp and refreshing cucumber, onion and peanut satay sauce. Omit the sauce to make any selection gluten free. Additional second course dishes include our famous Kerabu Prawn, which are cold jumbo prawns accompanied by pickled green papaya, mango, red onion, peanuts and toasted black sesame seeds punched up with a nyonya tangy spicy sauce or the gluten free Salt & Pepper Calamari made memorable with 13 spices, green and red bell pepper, onion and chili.

The entree section of our featured dinner includes a larger portion of the Beef Rendang (made with a cut of beef known as a banana shank) heightened by coconut curry and potatoes, our Malaysian Chicken Curry featuring galangal, pandan leaf, potatoes and turmeric, Coconut Prawn with shredded coconut, oatmeal, chili and curry leaf, and the vegetarian Curry Vegetable Casserole stuffed with king mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, bean curd, green beans, eggplant and tofu.
