Fill Up On Lent-Friendly Dishes Sans The Guilt At Antone’s Famous Po’Boys
For some, Lent may be a time of sacrifice, but who says you have to give up good eating? Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys makes the Lenten season a bit simpler — and more delicious — with a variety of flavorful seafood dishes available for dine-in, carryout and catering. The choices go beyond the stereotypical “Fish Fridays” with daily options such as our fried seafood basket stocked with tender shrimp, flaky catfish and plump oysters. (There’s also a generous shrimp-only version.) Both baskets come with French fries, hush puppies and cole slaw, plus wedges of fresh lemon and both tartar and cocktail sauces.
Sandwiches are another great choice this time of year, and the menu includes four Lent-friendly selections. The hot “New Orleans Style” fried oyster, fried shrimp, and fried catfish po’ boys each include lettuce, tomato and Cajun mayo on locally made bread from Royal Bakery and served with French fries and hush puppies. These make for a filling yet light lunch or dinner! For a cold variation, try the tuna po’ boy filled with housemade tuna salad, provolone cheese and pickles.
In need of some warm comfort fare? Spoon your way through bowls chock full of cozy goodness with two kinds of gumbo: a fragrant seafood or a hearty vegetarian version, each topped with a generous scoop of white rice and garnished with scallions. Red beans and rice are a local classic — and ours is no exception. Savory kidney beans are blended with seasonings and a thick, flavorful sauce and then crowned with fluffy rice. All three dishes are available by the cup or bowl and make versatile starters or main courses.
