Sponsored Event

It’s pretty common knowledge that finding financial support for local publications is tough these days. Houston Food Finder was on the brink of shutting down a few weeks ago when the community rallied to save it. Readers stepped forward and contributed to either a GoFundMe campaign started by Hometown Social’s Rachel Lewis or a Patreon account that offers reader rewards sponsored by local businesses. Furthermore, two other business owners took the initiative to create unique fundraising events that include food, drink and an overall good time. Shanon Scott and executive chef Angelo Cuppone of ROMA in Rice Village started a Wednesday night three-course dinner series that explore the regional cuisines of Italy to benefit Houston Food Finder. Now there’s a second event to enjoy. This Sunday, June 23 from 6 to 8 p.m., Candido Serrano, owner of the Think Tacos truck, is throwing a pop-up dinner at Heights Bier Garten at 1422 North Shepherd. Visit the Facebook event page to RSVP.

During the event, enjoy a traditional empanada plate with Mexican rice for $10, a bowl of pozole for $8 and elotes for $4. Serrano is contributing 100 percent of the profits to Houston Food Finder. Lead beer and cocktail writer Josh Armendariz is co-hosting on behalf of the publication. (Regrettably, editor and publisher Phaedra Cook’s family is dealing with the recent death of a close relative and she cannot attend as originally planned.)

“I’ve known Phaedra for a long time,” said Serrano. “And I’ve followed [Houston Food Finder] since she launched the website. She listed our food truck as one of the businesses open after Hurricane Harvey — she’s so supportive of local businesses. I wanted to help support her.”

Serrano started his Think Tacos truck about two years ago and says he’s learned a great deal about the food business from both Cook and Houston Food Finder. He’s taken Cook’s classes for industry professionals about food photography and working with media, and he’s followed the publication as a reader.

“I’ve taken some ideas from the articles I’ve read,” he says. “And she’s doing such a good job with this magazine. It would be sad if we lost it.”

Serrano says he’ll have a few tables reserved at Heights Bier Garten specifically for Houston Food Finder benefit attendees. He’s planning to offer those guests a thank you card they can toss into a container. At the end of the event, he’ll draw a winning card for one lucky customer to redeem for free tacos in the future. Of course, guests can also grab a beer from the Bier Garten’s extensive list to go alongside Serrano’s authentic Mexican fare.

A huge thanks goes to all of the Houston Food Finder readers who are attending these special dining events or have already contributed to keep this online publication running. In addition, thank you to Think Tacos, ROMA and all of the many Houston restaurants and bars that have contributed in-kind items for the Patreon account. We literally would not still be publishing without all of the support.
