Houston Restaurant Known for Lobster Rolls Opens New Location

Maine-ly Sandwiches co-founder Melvin "Buddy" Charity

New England-inspired seafood eatery Maine-ly Sandwiches has recently expanded to The Shops at Sawyer Yards at 2313 Edwards. The counter-service restaurant, which held its grand opening on January 27, specializes in Maine lobster rolls and Italian sandwiches, clam strips, chowder and regional desserts. To spread awareness for the new location, and to celebrate the kickoff of the 2024 Major League Baseball season, it will be running a $1 hot dog special from Thursday, March 28 until Sunday, March 31. It will also show the Astros Opening Day game against the Yankees on the big screen. Houston Food Finder was invited to try out Maine-ly’s offerings at the new location.

The restaurant is owned by Maine native Melvin “Buddy” Charity and his wife Angela, who met while serving in the military. They would later find their way to the Houston area and taught for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD for 20 years. Every summer, they would go back to Maine to get a taste of home until they decided it was time to bring that food to Texas. The couple opened the first Maine-ly Sandwiches location at 10745 North Freeway in Greenspoint followed quickly by subsequent locations in Montrose, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Cy-Fair and at 7620 Katy Freeway in the Marq’E Entertainment Center. A string of economic hardships saw all but the Marq’E Center location close permanently. The Sawyer Yards space, formerly Sticky’s Chicken, is now the second existing brick-and-mortar for Maine-ly.

“I have always admired Maine cooking, especially my mom’s. There is little Maine or New England cuisine in Houston, and we wanted to change that,” said Buddy. “For a long time — since the Shepherd location closed due to Harvey — we have been looking for another location inside the Loop and found this perfectly exquisite location in Sawyer Yards with plenty of parking. Our location in Shepherd did not have much parking, so we wanted to make sure we had a location with plenty of parking. Sawyer Yards is a great family destination and a perfect place for expansion. We could not be more excited to bring a taste of Maine and New England to the Sawyer Yards area.”

On the menu, you will find specialty rolls filled with chunks of sweet, tender Maine lobster including the Original prepared simply with mayo and a touch of salt and pepper, The Southern Crunch with red onions, celery and a light sprinkling of Tony Chachere’s, Texas Heat with fresh jalapeño slices, avocado and Tabasco, and the Fried Lobster Tail Roll. All of the rolls and sandwiches are served on buttered and grilled New England-style hot dog buns baked and delivered daily by Ashcraft/European Bakery in Stafford. Regular-size rolls go for $16.50 while large rolls cost $32.99. The new location is also featuring a food challenge, immortalizing those who can put away a 48-inch lobster roll in under 15 minutes by mounting their photo on the wall (and there are  also prizes!)

New England natives and fans of silly names will love the housemade desserts, including whoopie pies — chocolate cake-like cookie sandwiches with a filling similar to frosting, Fluff a Nutter sandwiches with peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, Fluff a Tellas with Nutella, taffy bags and funnel cake fries for those of us who enjoy rodeo carnival treats year-round. Wash ‘em down with a cold bottle of Moxie, a sweet soda similar to root beer with strong notes of licorice. It’s the official soft drink of Maine and the oldest continuously produced soft drink in the country.
