Black Rock Coffee Bar, 11930 Broadway: The Pearland location of this Portland, Oregon-based coffee shop opened on June 17. Fans flock in for iced and blended coffees, smoothies, the exclusive Fuel energy drinks and cold, fruit-based beverages.

Signature iced drinks include the Caramel Blondie (caramel white mocha), Jackhammer (vanilla mocha with an extra double shot), Blackout (hazelnut mocha) and the rather extreme-sounding I.V. (Irish cream and vanilla breve with six shots). 

Blended specialties include Caramel Truffle, Chai Chiller, Chocolate Chip and Caramel Blondie. There is a smoothie made with strawberry, wildberry, peach, mango and green apple, and iced, fruit-flavored drinks, too, topped with fresh fruit such as Pineapple Green Tea & OJ with dragon fruit and Strawberry & Coconut topped with strawberries. Drinks are available with regular dairy, or soy, almond, coconut and oat milk alternatives.

The Fuel energy drinks are available in organic, original and sugar-free and guests can order customized cups with more than 20 syrups in familiar or unexpected flavors such as almond, blue raspberry, passion fruit, banana, blackberry and lavender, and sugar-free selections like Irish cream, peach, vanilla and peppermint.

Chop Ice Cream, 11200 Broadway: Create-your-own rolled ice cream is $4.99 for regular size and $5.99 for a large.  Each come with two toppings and one drizzle. Add extra toppings for $.50 each and drizzles for $.25 each. First, choose a base from original or dairy-free ice cream in one of 20 flavors such as green tea, peach, chocolate and black sesame. Next, select from 20 toppings that include nuts, chocolates, gummy candies, popping boba and fruit. Drizzles complete the treat in one of five flavors like caramel, strawberry and condensed milk.

There are signature rolls, too, presented as multi-textural sundaes. These cost $5.99 and are available in 14 variations. Try the Incredible Hulk made with mint ice cream and Oreos topped with Oreo crumbs, Pocky and chocolate drizzle, Strawberry Cheezycake with cheesecake ice cream and strawberries topped with graham cracker crumbs and whipped cream, or Donk-E-Kong made with chocolate, banana, nutella and peanut butter flavored ice creams, and topped with fresh bananas and whipped cream.

Killen’s Burgers, 2804 South Main: Burgers, hot dogs and other classic American fare are staples at this relaxed, 1950s-style diner from James Beard Award semifinalist chef Ronnie Killen (of Killen’s Steakhouse, Killen’s Barbecue and others). The handspun milkshakes are essential either as accompaniments or for a cool pick-me-up on the go. Choose from classics such as strawberry, chocolate, salted caramel and vanilla, or get fancy with Apple Pie, Mocha Almond Fudge or Banana Pudding flavors.

Kung Fu Tea, 11200 Broadway: This internationally popular shop has a variety of hot, cold and blended selections. The menu is broken down into categories: milk tea, including Coconut Milk Tea; punch (freshly squeezed lemonade mixed with brewed teas flavored with fruits such as mango or grapefruit), Milk Cap topped with a thick layer of creamy, lightly salted milk, Classic like Longan Jujube Tea, Slush with options including strawberry or Oreo, and Milk Strike, which is made with lactose-free Lactaid milk for customers sensitive to dairy. There are seasonal specials, too, including Purple Yam Latte, Rosehip Pineapple Punch and Yogurt Peach Lemonade. Customize all beverages with toppings such as a variety of popping bubbles, pudding, red bean and tapioca. You can even purchase a digital drink gift card to send to friends and family.

La Monarca, 6200 Broadway: This family-owned and -operated ice cream parlor and snack shop opened in 2008. It has since expanded to 10 Texas locations. Frozen treats include housemade ice cream, popsicles, magonadas, smoothies, milkshakes and specialty desserts.

Choose from more than 26 ice creams that reflect a range of flavor profiles, from essential vanilla, chocolate and strawberry to less-common Cheese with Blackberry, Yellow Cherry, Gansito (chocolate-covered pastry with strawberry and cream filling) and Ferrero Rocher. Sorbets include guava and mango. Popsicles follow a similar menu, and include rice pudding, strawberries n’ cream and banana with chocolate, and dairy-free flavors like watermelon, pineapple, mango or cucumber with chile and soursop. Mangonadas come in nine flavors that include cantaloupe, mixed fruit and tamarind. There are also banana splits, smoothies, milkshakes and esquimal (chocolate-covered popsicles).

Mia Thai Tea, 3220 Kirby: This vibrant tea shop opened in January, and offers a wide selection of cold and blended tea-based drinks, many of which are available without caffeine.

Choose from 15 kinds of milk tea such as Thai Green and Mia Lava Boba, 19 fruit teas available with green or black tea in flavors like kiwi, mango and dragon fruit-peach, smoothies or slushies in 16 combinations like Japanese Matcha Frappe, S’Mores Chocolate Chip Blended and Mixed Berry Slush. The Secret Menu includes the Rainbow Milk Slushy and Jasmine Green Tea with Honeycomb. Complete drinks with toppings like aloe vera, assorted bobas and jellies, special house cream and “sea salt creame”.

There are mochi and ice creams, too, and flavors may include Brown Sugar Boba, Chocolate & Almond. Customize drink selections with raw honey or stevia sweeteners, and almond milk or Lactaid. Guests can even request sugar levels from 0% to 100%. Follow on Facebook for current specials.

Pearland Coffee Roasters, 4106 West Broadway: The laid-back vibes are contagious at this local roastery, which opened 12 years ago. In addition to the cheerful dining room, there is an inviting patio and free Wi-Fi. Cool down with current seasonal specials such as the Iced Tea Shandy with lemon syrup, Topo Chico and a choice of tea or Cold Brew Shandy, which swaps coffee for the tea. There is also Vietnamese Iced Coffee made with cold brew concentrate and sweetened condensed milk (non-dairy alternative is available), and an iced Blueberry Lavender Chai Latte.

The everyday chilled menu includes assorted iced teas and cold brews. The cold brew concentrate is available in 32-ounce bottles to go. There are also daily deliveries of baked goods from Kraftsmen Baking in Houston and breakfast tacos from The Box Bakery and Kitchen in Pearland.

Red Circle Ice Cream, 8201 Broadway: The original location of this modern ice cream parlor opened in Houston’s International District in 2017, and has since expanded to three regional shops. The company motto is sweet and to the point: “Eat Ice Cream. Live Happy.” 

For your own taste of happiness, try one of the shop’s more than 100 rotating flavors of ice cream, plus add-ons of housemade churros and Pufflelicious (Hong Kong-style egg waffle). Cap off your creation with toppings for a truly customized, Instagram-worthy treat. Ice creams are available by the scoop or as part of a macaron sandwich, and there are six pre-set Frosty Churro selections that include housemade churros served with vanilla soft serve and toppings. These include the S’mores Smash with chocolate drizzle, marshmallows and graham crackers, or Caramel Crunch made with a caramel drizzle and caramel popcorn. Sundae-style combinations of egg waffles, ice cream and toppings include Monster Mash with chocolate dream ice cream, marshmallows, Oreos and Pocky sticks, plus build-your-own options.

To drink, try Insomniac Iced Coffee (Vietnamese coffee with optional ice cream), Iced Thai Tea or housemade lemonades in mango, guava or passion fruit available with a scoop of sorbet. There is also a Churro Dream Shake, which is a choice of ice cream, a cup drizzle, whipped cream and choice from cinnamon sugar churro, glazed, graham cracker or cap’n crunch churro stix. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for seasonal specials such as Pineapple Upside Cake, Mellow Fluff and Wicked Pumpkin.

R&B Tea, 3422 Business Center Drive: This Taiwanese tea house offers plenty of ways to cool down this summer with a primarily cold-drink menu. The newest seasonal flavors are Coconut Slush and the iced Mixed Berry Green Tea and blended Mixed Berry Stormy (the stormy series is a menu of blended drinks that incorporate House Cream). Regular menu slushes include lychee, passion fruit, peach, pineapple and mangonada, and the refreshing iced Hawaiian Fruit Green Tea made with green tea, peach, grapefruit, watermelon, kumquat, lemon, lime and orange. Cool coffee-based options include Brown Sugar Boba Latte, Vietnamese Iced Coffee and Hazelnut Vietnamese Iced Coffee

Customize the sweetness level for any drink with a choice of no sugar, extra sugar, normal or 30, 50 or 70-percent sugar level. Substitute honey for a small upcharge, and customize with à la carte toppings such as assorted fruit flavored popping boba, coffee jelly, Sea Cream and egg pudding. All drinks are available for pickup via the Clover app (phone orders are not accepted).

Refresqueria Puerto Escondido, 3538 Broadway: Visit this casual Mexican snack house for sweet and icy drinks and treats available with a slew of flavor and topping combinations. A big draw is the Raspa snow cone (similar to Hawaiian shave ice, which has a more delicate texture than typical American snow cones). There are natural or artificial flavors available, such as pineapple, mango, watermelon and rainbow. Deluxe versions combine flavors and toppings in one package finished with diced fruit, ice cream, condensed milk and waffle cone sticks. Ice cream is available by the cup or cone, in a Banana Split, and popsicles in assorted shapes such as sandwich or cartoon characters.

Frosty drinks include Mangonada (a sweet-savory-spicy mango drink with chamoy and chile), Mangonada Supreme finished with chunks of mango, a tamarind straw and Salsaghetti candy and Maleada, which is an ice cream and fruit milkshake finished with whipped cream and chocolate topping. There are smoothies, too, such as the banana, apple, melon and pineapple, plus milkshakes.

Smallcakes Cupcakery & Creamery, 11200 Broadway: There’s a reason why cake and ice cream are a natural pairing — they just work. The same can be said for this bakery’s treats, which include creatively decorated cupcakes, custom cakes, cookies and more, plus small batch housemade ice creams by the scoop or in a milkshake. Ice cream is made daily with “always available” strawberry, vanilla, cookies and cream and Cookie Monster (vanilla ice cream tinted blue and layered with chocolate chips, chocolate chip cookies and oreos), plus rotating flavors such as Snickerdoodle.

There are also a variety of tantalizing cake and ice cream combinations. These include the Cupcake SMASH, which is a choice of cupcake cut in half and filled with a choice of ice cream, an Ice Cream Sandwich made with a choice of ice cream between two cookies and a Brownie Parfait with three brownies and two scoops of ice cream finished with sweet garnishes.

The Drink Station, 8209 Broadway: This cheerful tea and coffee shop is popular for creative drinks with fun outer space and pop culture-inspired names, plus a solid Keto-friendly menu. Wear a Hawaiian shirt on Sundays and get 20-percent off your drink!

Order hot or iced espresso-based coffee drinks, and the Phwapaccino (get it?), which comes in Chocolate Mocha, Cinnamon Dolce, Caramel or the Wide Awake!!! that includes four shots of espresso. Customize your drink with à la carte syrups such as peppermint, white chocolate, matcha and chai. Slushies come in 10 flavors like Tropical, Pineapple Orange Banana, Never Let Go, Rose, and Starship, and smoothies are available in 19 flavors. The latter include Apple Pie, Unicorn Dream, Bahama Mama, Strawberry Banana and Citrus Blast. Upgrade any drink with toppings of fruit gels, popping boba and tapioca pearls (note that the toppings are not Keto). The Keto menu includes smoothies, fruit tea and slushies.

To eat, try a la carte items or go for the Surprise Asian Snack Box, that comes with four large and four small treats that are no sold individually in the store. Each box also includes a Cat Dollar (a coupon for $1 off your next drink purchase), and one in every six boxes also includes a merchandise surprise. Take a photo in front of the other-worldly Portal Wall, and follow the shop on Facebook for special events, such as Mario Kart tournaments with prizes.

The Snowcone Lady’s Snack Shack, 4218 Broadway: This cheerful, year-round outpost is popular for sweet treats, savory snacks and a family friendly atmosphere. Menu highlights include snow cones that start at just $1.50. Additional favorites include chamoys, banana splits and specialty sundaes. The latter include the Fruit And Ice Cream Combo with two scoops of ice cream and fresh fruit, and the Ice Cream Sundae with a choice of three scoop flavors, whipped cream, a choice of caramel, chocolate or strawberry sauce and finished with sprinkles. For something a little more adventurous, try the Frozen Pick-A-Dilly, which is shaved ice with pickles topped with chamoy, Tajin chile and a choice of snow-cone syrup. Shakes and Fraps round out the menu, in flavors such as Banana With Cinnamon and caramel, respectively.

The large,inviting pet-friendly patio is ideal for hanging out with friends and family. (Treat your furry friend to a Pup Cup with whipped cream!) Entertaining games include basketball, corn hole, oversized Connect Four, hula hoops, tabletop games and more.
