Ever tried Sri Lankan food inside a gas station convenience store? Well, if that sounds up your alley then read on to learn more about a new food stall serving wok-fired South Asian specialties in northwest Houston.

Chef and co-owner Ashandi Meemaduma opened Yakaa Bites in the back of Bally Mart in Cypress this past February. The menu is built around authentic, affordable Sri Lankan street food, known as short eats, including savory rolls, stuffed pastries, curry-focused dishes and spice-forward comfort foods that remain uncommon in the Houston area. 

Specialty items include Hot Butter Calamari tossed with butter, garlic, chilies, green onions and bold spices, as well as roti canai, fried rice and a pair of burgers. Guests can choose a traditional burger with seasoned fries for $8.99 or Yakaa’s Signature Burger topped with house sauce, spicy sautéed onions (sambal), lettuce and melted cheese for $9.99. The burger is a fine budget-friendly option, but the plated dishes are where Yakaa Bites shines. Friday features include staples such as rice & curry, lamprais and chicken kottu — a beloved Sri Lankan street food made by stir-frying chopped godamba roti with aromatic spices, vegetables, eggs and tender chicken curry.

There is only one two-top table available for dining in, so plan accordingly. On the plus side, there is no shortage of beverage options inside the convenience store. The menu also offers plenty of protein choices, vegetarian options and customizable spice levels.
