Restaurant Wholesaler Opens Galveston Grocery Store Open to All

Gordon Restaurant Market in Galveston

On March 26, the seventh Gordon Restaurant Market in the Houston metropolitan area will open at 2402 45th Street in Galveston. The shop is part of the Gordon Food Service corporation. Best known as a wholesale restaurant supplier, it’s been in business for over 125 years and will sell pre-made meals, bulk foods, and individual ingredients. The store is open to not just restaurants, but also the general public.

“In 1979, [Gordon Food Service] started this concept of stores to meet the fill-in needs for restaurants between their deliveries. We’ve always been open to the public,” says marketing director Mark Dempsey. “But we were really built for the restaurant trade; a place for food service operations to fill in between deliveries or for small operators to have a place to come in and buy restaurant-quality products. And then consumers ended up loving our stores.”

He also notes that individual customers appreciate the access to the many “unique items that normally are only available to restaurants” and that bulk purchasing options are open to all visitors.

GRM does not charge shoppers a membership fee, regardless of whether they’re buying for their household or a restaurant. However, they do offer the Gordon Go! loyalty rewards program for wholesalers and nonprofits (sorry, individual shoppers!), where points can be spent like cash in-store or redeemed for checks.

According to a press release, Gordon Restaurant Market customers can expect the following features and items for sale:

  • Seasonal produce
  • Fresh meats available by the piece, pound or case
  • Walk-in coolers with bulk cases of produce, meats and dairy items
  • Prepared and quick-prep meals, as well as ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat items like rotisserie and fried chicken, ribs, deli sandwiches, hand-made guacamole, cut fruit and freshly squeezed juices
  • Fresh tortillas made daily in an on-site tortilleria
  • 15 varieties of gourmet, fresh-popped popcorn

In addition to foodstuffs, GRM carries cookware, kitchen gadgets, reusable utensils, disposable kitchen supplies, catering supplies, cleaning supplies, barware and cooking fuel.

Dempsey says that some of the “fan favorite” items include bacon, housemade macaroni and cheese, brisket and “easy dinner tonight sort of things.” Online ordering, in-store pickup and same-day delivery services will also be available for customers on the move or who may be homebound. The store will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

In 2023, six Gordon Restaurant Markets opened in the Houston area, spanning from the Champions area in northwest Houston all the way south to League City. Galveston seemed like the next logical spot for location number seven.

“Our stores have been warmly received, and we’re growing day by day. We’re super-excited about Houston,” Dempsey says. “It’s such an exciting and dynamic place in the country. It’s growing so fast, and there’s so much going on there.”Additional information regarding the new Gordon Restaurant Market location in Galveston, as well as coupons and special deals, can be found on the store’s website.
