Restaurant Happenings & Specials for Labor Day 2020 in Houston

While celebrating Labor Day during COVID-19 is different than previous years, Houstonians can still enjoy a plethora of choices on Monday around town or at home. Here’s a list of restaurants around town doing something special for the holiday weekend, including all-day brunches on Monday, thick steaks to go, family feasts to take home and big discounts on sake.

We’re continuing to update this list as new information comes in.

8th Wonder Distillery, 2202 Dallas: For those looking for drink deals to go along with their festive Labor Day food, the distillery (while not open to enjoy onsite right now) is offering 20% off of everything it sells. Order online and use code LABORDAY20. The sale includes spirits — hopped gin, whiskey, silver rum and vodka — spiked lemonade and michelada mix. as well as glassware and other merchandise. Pickup of orders is from 1 to 7 p.m., except on Sundays.

a’bouzy, 2300 Westheimer: Brunch is served all day on Labor Day, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut NV is only $49 and available for both dine in and to go. For those enjoying the holiday at home, a’Bouzy is offering a BBQ Feast for Two with a half-rack of ribs, Cornish game hen smoked sausage link, coleslaw, barbecue baked beans plus a bottle of Springtree Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 for $42. For those with kids, you can add a hot dog, french fries and fruit for $12.99. Reservations are required for those dining in; make those or phone in to-go orders to (713) 222-6899.

Backstreet Cafe, 1103 South Shepherd: The Labor Day Takeout Package for $89 serves up to four and features two shareable main course: the pork rib slab with peach glaze or the marinated skirt steak with chimichurri sauce. There’s also a choice of three side dishes such as Roasted Corn Salad with cherry tomatoes, basil, cotija cheese, lemon vinaigrette and Loaded Cauliflower. Choose apple crisp or banana pudding for dessert.

Berg Hospitality: Berg Hospitality is offering cocktail and wine packages to-go from their following locations: B&B Butchers & Restaurant, B.B. Italia, B.B. Lemon,The Annie Café & Bar / Turner’s. All cocktail packages serve from two to four persons, mixed and ready to enjoy available to accompany any curbside pickup take-out orders by calling it in with your order. Caracol, 2200 Post Oak: Brunch is served on Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, and there’s also a Labor Day Take & Bake deal that serves four. It includes two sharable entrées: lomito relleno, a 20-ounce teres major cut of beef that’s marinated in adobo, stuffed with mushrooms and huitlacoche and grilled, and costillas a las brazas, or wood-roasted pork ribs with pickled onion. Diners can also choose three sides from an offered assortment and also get a family-style dessert of chocolate flan with vanilla Chantilly cream, cocoa nibs and seasonal fruit. Order the pack online. Pickup is only on Sunday or Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Caracol is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings.)

Common Bond Bistro & Bakery, multiple locations: Common Bond Bistro & Bakery is extending its popular brunch service and running it on Labor Day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The brunch menu includes Tamale Benedict, Bacon and Egg Flatbread, Beef and Grits, shrimp and grits and fried chicken and biscuits. Lunch and dinner is also served at all locations during the holiday.

Dish Society, all locations: Monday brunch service is offered on Labor Day from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., followed by the usual social hour and dinner offerings with table service until 10 p.m. Socially distance indoors or on the patio over frozen mimosasRed Velvet Pancakes,  Shrimp & Smoked Gouda GritsPork Belly Hash and more brunch-time faves. Dish Society’s full menu is also available for curbside pickup or delivery; place orders online.

Hugo’s, 1600 Westheimer: There’s something for diners either looking forward to eating out or wanting to safely stay home. On Monday, there’s a special a la carte Labor Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (for safety purposes, self-service brunch is on hold), or customers can pick up a Skirt Steak Package for home instead. The pack includes 2 pounds of skirt steak, rice, beans, guacamole, salsa, chips, tortillas, pico de gallo and tres leches. It serves four and costs $79 plus tax. Orders can be placed online and pickup is on Sunday or Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. only. (Hugo’s is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings.)

Goode Co. Taqueria, 4902 Kirby: On Labor Day, the longstanding Rice Village restaurant is serving breakfast from 8 am until noon, featuring items usually only available on the weekends such as Hunter’s Delight, Catfish & Eggs, pecan waffles, omelets, migas and steak & eggs. For those looking for more than breakfast, there are also fajita packs and margarita kits to go.

Liberty Kitchen, 4224 San Felipe and 963 Bunker Hill:  Both the Oysterette and Treehouse locations — which recently got a new owner — are serving Labor Day brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The full brunch menu is online and the options include a raw bar featuring various appellations of freshly shucked oysters, poke and a sashimi platter, hot breakfast dishes such as chicken fried steak and eggs and plenty of cool salads, including the tableside-prepared Caesar.

Mastro’s Restaurant, 1650 West Loop South: Mastro’s DIY Grill Kits are perfect for spending Labor Day in your own backyard. The kits range range from $120 to $180 and come in options such as New York strip steaks for two to a hefty, 40-ounce Wagyu Tomahawk. Side options include Lobster Mashed Potatoes and Rosemary Garlic Sautéed Mushrooms. For $15 extra, enhance your grill kits with truffle or bone marrow butter. Bottles of wine, including Moet Imperial Brut and Caymus Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, also also available to-go at additional cost, and the packs are available from September 4 through September 7. The Oceanaire Seafood Room, 5061 Westheimer: In celebration of the long weekend, for just $39 Oceanaire Seafood Room diners get a three-course dinner with their choice of a starter, entree and dessert including offerings such as a bowl of chowder, crispy-fried calamari, grilled wild Alaska salmon, 6-ounce center-cut filet mignon, flourless chocolate torte and New York-style cheesecake. Wine lovers can pair dinner with  Mer Soleil “Reserve” Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay for $59, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir for $79 and Stags’ Leap Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for $99.

Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille, all Greater Houston-area locations: the homegrown steakhouse chain has a Steakhouse Fajita Smorgasbord to go through Tuesday, September 8. It includes a pound each of Encrusted Ribeye Fajitas, Signature Pork Fajitas with Perry’s famous pork rub, sautéed shrimp, sous vide grilled chicken and sautéed onions and peppers. Alongside come Mexican rice, guacamole, salsa verde, pico de gallo, cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce and flour or corn tortillas. It’s a full meal for up to six people and costs $125. Tax and a 15% handling fee is added to to-go orders, but no gratuity is required. Phat Eatery, 23119 Colonial Parkway: Saturday through Monday, Phat Eatery is offering $3 pints of local draft beer and 8-ounce carafes of hot sake, as well as buy two, get one free pints of housemade ice cream, offered in Purple Ube, Coconut Curry, Malay Iced Tea and Durian. The drink offers for dine-in only but the ice cream special is available for both dine-in and to-go. Phat Eatery has also extended its special of Canadian snow crab legs braised in Malaysian curry sauce through Labor Day. The cost is $38 per order for two large clusters.

State Fare Kitchen + Bar, 947 Gessner and 15930 City Walk:  The Memorial and new Sugar Land location (which has a patio that we just featured) are both serving brunch on Labor Day until 4 p.m. Go online to view the Memorial brunch menu or the Sugar Land one, which includes dishes such as the Brunch Burger (with an egg on top, of course) and lighter fare, like the EaDo Poke Bowl featuring fresh tuna.

Superica, 1801 North Shepherd: On Monday, September 7, Superica is serving a special Labor Day brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Limited brunch dishes are available for takeout with the full menu available for dine-in. Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, both locations : Sylvia’s is offering a great Fajita-Dinner-for-Four deal for take-out only. For $59.95, get chicken or beef fajitas for four people, rice, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, cheddar cheese and flour or corn tortillas. For those dining in, Happy Hour for drinks and bites is all day long on Monday. Note that masks are required while being seated, leaving and while moving around in the restaurant.

Tobiuo Sushi & Bar, 23501 Cinco Ranch: For Labor Day, diners can get half off all yakitori (except for the A5 Wagyu skewer) and bottles of cold sake. The deals are available for both dine-in and to-go. For those dining in, there is an additional special on $2 pours of hot sake.
