Momentum Coffee Brings High-Quality Brews To Spring

A group of highly trained and experienced professionals have banded together to bring an underserved area of Spring a top-notch coffee house. Don’t worry, tea lovers: there are some excellent brewed beverages for you to enjoy as well.

Momentum Coffee is now open at 3555 Rayford just off the Hardy Toll Road. It’s co-owned by Allen Leibowitz, Tia Hoffman, Ethan Elms and Kat Neuman. Leibowitz and Hoffman have both been involved with the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA); Hoffman has also worked as a specialty coffee buyer with Whole Foods in The Woodlands. Elms’ background includes being head barista at Dish Society and a barista at Morningstar, while Newman has worked as a barista at Inversion Coffee & Art.

Expect more than the usual suspects of coffee beans here. Leibowitz is sourcing not just locally, but nationally, to bring in beans roasted in the profiles he prefers. He says the “workhorse” is Roadhouse Joe, a coffee from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Leibowitz collaborated with chef Alex Young there for a result that “emphasizes body and balance over sharpness and acidity.” Momentum Coffee will also source from Wilson’s Coffee in Milwaukee, a little-known roaster that Leibowitz says is one of the best in the United States.

Momentum Coffee’s list includes all the espresso drinks that coffee aficionados desire, including lattes, flat whites, cortados and a lightly sweet mocha made with Barry Callebaut chocolate.

The tea brands served are Dammann, which Leibowitz says, “makes the best Earl Grey I’ve ever tasted,” and Rishi. At a friends and family preview, we fell in love with the Turmeric Ginger tea from the latter, a caffeine-free blend that includes organic ginger root as well as lemon and orange peels. The company’s web site says adding a bit of honey makes this “an ancient herbal recipe for longevity, stamina and balance.” Whether you believe that or not, either way it’s a spicy, tongue-tingling blend.

Of course, people appreciate having something to munch on and Momentum Coffee is, remarkably, sourcing sponge cake from Italy and croissants from Canada. Leibowitz says the products arrive frozen and are baked as needed at the shop. There’s also a selection of dark and white chocolate bars, as well as some old-fashioned ones named Zzang! bars made by Zimmerman’s. One is the Ca$hew Cow, a dark chocolate-dipped bar made with cashew butter, roasted cashews, cashew brittle, puffed rice, milk chocolate and a bit of sea salt.

Momentum Coffee is open from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends.
