Lighten Up with Japanese-Style Sunday Brunch in Houston’s Memorial Area

Brunch is often regarded as a hearty, devil-may-care time for indulgence but the draggy, post-meal feeling can put a real damper on the rest of the day. KUU, the elegant Japanese restaurant in the Gateway Memorial City center under executive chef Adison Lee, is putting its own fresh spin on the Sunday meal. KUU’s brunch menu combines traditional Japanese elements with locally sourced seasonal products. Lee (whose background includes Nobu Los Angeles under master chef Nobu Matsuhisa) crafted new brunch dishes that use lighter ingredients than the heavier standard brunch fare.

Served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays, the à la carte, tapas-style dishes range in price from $10 to $20 per item and is broken out to into three sections: Features, Pasta & Rice, and Greens with an extra section divided into snacks (which includes unlimited trips to a snack and beverage bar). There is also a brunch combo that for $38 gives diners the choice of any two items from the brunch and snack/beverage bar.

Under the Features section, which offers eight different dishes, some of the standouts include Kiwi French ToastSeafood Pancake and Berkshire Pork with a 60-degree egg. From the Pasta & Rice part of the menu, the truffle fried rice is one of the heartier offerings that are large enough for sharing if ordered as a side dish. It’s worth every calorie.

A selection in the lightest part of the menu, The Greens, include The Imo Salad. It combines Japanese purple yams, red yams, edamame, cherry tomatoes, corn, and bell peppers atop fresh greens with a citrus-based dressing. The Yaki Imo also include Japanese purple yams, this time combined with bacon and cheese and adorned with a quail egg.

Since no brunch is complete without cocktails, KUU also offers regular mimosas, as well as pomegranate and lavender versions. Those who are really into truffles can steer for the Truffle Bloody Mary. KUU can also accommodate private brunches in the dining room that seats up to 22 persons.
