Let Freedom Ring with these July 4 Specials
After the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams (who became our second president) wrote to his wife Abigail that Independence Day should be celebrated with “Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” Although this year’s holiday probably won’t look much like what Adams envisions due to pandemic concerns, good food is still on the table. Our list highlights some of the Houston-area restaurants that are pulling out all the stops with festive holiday feasts available to-go and for delivery with some offering dine-in, too.
The Union Kitchen, 9955 Barker Cypress: Purchase an entrée and get an additional entrée of equal or lesser value free. Choose from selections such as Tyler’s Pasta made with fresh fettuccine pasta and chicken tossed in a sun-dried tomato pesto cream sauce and fresh basil or The New Union Burger with cheddar and Swiss cheese, bacon, A-1 Steak Sauce aioli and shaved onion strings served on a wheat bun with a side of housemade chips. Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, 1140 Eldridge: Get a Fourth of July Picnic Pack, including a mesquite-grilled whole chicken and baby back ribs, Sylvia’s potato salad, Mexican rice, charro beans, guacamole, corn tortillas, sopapillas, and chips and salsa. The cost is $27.50 plus tax and gratuity for two people and $55 plus tax and gratuity for four. Customizations are also available at a cost of $2 per person. Caracol, 2200 Post Oak: Give July 4 a Mexican spin with a selection of take-and-bake specials from Chef Hugo Ortega. Each serves up to four people and includes a choice of sides and desserts. Choose from Pollo Costeño (two wood oven-roasted chickens), a pint of Adobo Costeño, grilled Cambray onions and two dozen corn tortillas for $70; Costillas a las Brazas includes a two-and-a-half-pound rack of baby pork ribs, a pint of Adobo and a cup of pickled onions for $75 plus tax; and the Botana Oaxaqueña, includes a pound of reay-to-grill chorizo Mexicano and two pounds of marinated skirt steak, six ounces of Oxacan cheese, habanero sauce and two dozen corn tortillas for $130. Order online by 4 p.m. July 2 and pick up between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on July 4.
Etoile Cuisine et Bar, 1101-11 Uptown Park Blvd : There’s a special four-course, Lafayette Menu available on July 4 featuring selections such as signature foie gras, lobster salad, red snapper, duck breast and apricot and almond cake with bourbon ice cream. The cost is $65 per person, plus tax and gratuity. The special is available for dine-in or takeout, and reservations are strongly recommended. The Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa, 111 North Post Oak Lane: Members and guests of The Houstonian can get a charming July 4 picnic. Opt for a Couple’s Basket with a variety of cheese and charcuterie along with an organic greens and citrus salad, three mini sandwiches (smoked chicken, roast beef and salmon), dessert bites and bottled water for $60. For extra romance, add a bottle of Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa for an additional $54 or the Lioco Chardonnay from Sonoma for $56. Non-members and guests can enjoy a to-go order of the Painted Hills Prime Rib All-American Plate available during dinner hours. Kenny & Ziggy’s Delicatessen, 2327 Post Oak: Enjoy the Three Dog Flight all day on July 4. The hotdog trio includes one piled high with potato salad and mustard, one filled with coleslaw and mustard and one loaded with sauerkraut and mustard. It costs $17.95 for the set, which is available for dine-in only.
Greenway Plaza/Upper Kirby
Feges BBQ, 3 Greenway Plaza: It’s hard to imagine the Fourth of July without barbecue, and this Bayou City favorite has home cooks covered. Order BBQ in Bulk for an Independence Day celebration. Meats are pre-cooked, chilled and vacuum sealed for reheating at home. Choose from options such as half a brisket for $50, two pounds of pulled pork for $30, smoked sausage for $16, smoked chicken wings for $15 and more. Place to-go orders online in advance with a scheduled pickup at Greenway Plaza now through Friday, July 3 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Last-minute planners can also find some of the bulk menu items at Feges’ stand at the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market on Saturday, July 4 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Fajitas A Go Go, 5404 Kirby: The DIY Fourth of July Grill Pack includes two pounds of Angus sirloin flap steak, one pound of shrimp and one pound of Fajitas A Go Go’s signature boar sausage all ready for grilling. The package also contains Go Go Seasoning, chips and queso, guacamole, rice, beans, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, flour tortillas, and one liter of Fajitas A Go Go’s Margarita Agave Mix. Alice Blue, 250 W. 19th Street: Chef Brandi Key has created a to-go feast that’s perfect for four people. It includes a full rack of ribs and a pound of country sausage served with potato salad, fresh corn, loaded side salad and a dessert. The cost is $75. Phat Eatery, 23119 Colonial Pkwy: Give Independence Day a little Malaysian kick with the restaurant’s popular Randang Curry Beef Ribs, back specifically for the holiday. It features get a whole rack of ribs with chef Alex Auyeung’s award-winning rendang curry sauce served hot with sides of potato and steamed rice. The cost is $35 and quantities are limited. State Fare Kitchen & Bar, 947 Gessner: Order the new Buckets o’Stuff available just in time for summer dining. There are five buckets to choose from and all are to-go: two pounds of smoked wings for $16, three pounds of grilled catfish for $36, fried chicken for $16, two pounds of chicken tenders for $18 and three pieces of white and three pieces of dark Htown Hot Chicken for $26. Brennan’s, 3300 Smith: Put a little Creole cuisine into an Independence Day menu with Brennan’s dine-in or “To Geaux” specials available July 3 through July 5. Choose from the Creole-Spiced Smoked Prime Ribeye, 10 ounces of Linz prime ribeye with a rich bone marrow bordelaise sauce for $52, or a dozen “Fried” New Orleans BBQ Shrimp, which are head-on shrimp and New Orleans BBQ Sauce available at market price. Each of these serves two people. Georgia James, 1100 Westheimer: Chef de cuisine Greg Peters hosts a hands-on grilling class at 1 p.m. on July 4, for those who want some help with a DIY celebration. For $175 guests can reserve a spot in the class and pick up a kit including a whole chicken, Chris Shepherd’s bacon sausage, slaw, baked beans, Victoria’s Famous Banana Pudding, and plenty of sauce, sides and bread. The kit and class can be purchased online and buyers will receive the Zoom link details on July 3. Kits must be picked up on July 3 between 4 and 8 p.m.
The Phoenix, 1915 Westheimer: To-go drink specials are the name of the game at this beloved brew pub. Get half-off buckets of beer (each order includes a brand-new bucket packed with ice and a choice of beer), or choose a variety of wines which are all 25 percent off. UB Preserv, 1609 Westheimer: The restaurant has a special July 4 à la carte menu available for dine-in or to-go. On offer are a full rack of char sui pork ribs, pork belly kimchi fried rice, wok-fried collard green egg roles, eggplant and summer squash curry and crispy rice salad. To-go orders must be placed online by selecting the July 4 menu from the drop down and must be picked up on Saturday, July 4.
Backstreet Cafe, 1103 S. Shepherd: The cozy River Oaks restaurant offers a take-and-bake barbecue package, perfect for backyard grilling. It feeds four and includes a smoked chicken, rack of pork ribs, chimichurri and barbecue sauces, a choice of two sides such as macaroni and cheese, pan-seared Brussels sprouts or watermelon salad and a choice of desserts including a July 4 tart, a dozen chocolate-chip cookies or peach and blueberry crisp. Naturalist, 6750 Main: The restaurant in the InterContinental Hotel has a series of summer specials available July 3 through 5. The Summer Salad made with compressed watermelon garnished with basil, blueberries and feta cheese is $10 and Carl’s Eyedrop cocktail made with Tito’s Vodka, cranberry and grapefruit juices, syrup and grenadine topped with raspberries is also $10. Additional drink specials include $5 domestic draft beers and a $10 Michelado.
Washington Avenue/Rice Military/Shady Acres
B&B Butchers, 1814 Washington: A host of summer grilling packages are available for backyard cookouts. There’s a Steak Kit Dinner for Two that includes a choice of 21-ounce filets or bone-in ribeye along with a pound of asparagus, russet potatoes, iceberg lettuce, tomato and bleu cheese dressing for $65. The Family Grill Package features four Wagyu burgers, a pound of Texas Wagyu hot dogs with Martin’s Famous Potato Buns, a pound of thick-cut bacon and Hill Country sausage for $55. Dickey’s Barbeque Pit: The casual restaurant’s Baytown, Friendswood, Katy, Kingwood and Pearland locations are open for carry out, pickup or delivery on July 4. Look for menu favorites such as Pit-Smoked Wings and Fall-Off-The-Bone Ribs available in six, nine, 12, 18 and 24 pieces.
Jax Grill, 1613 Shepherd; 6510 S. Rice and 9920 Gaston: Dine in on July Fourth and get a sweet BOGO deal. Perry’s Steakhouse: The Steakhouse Fajita Smorgasbord To Go is available through Monday, July 6.
