Octopus a la Ensenada

Get ready for Latin Restaurant Weeks to spice up your life and challenge your idea of Latin cuisine. This two-week occasion starts June 17 and continues until the end of the month, during which time restaurants, bakeries, food trucks and caterers will offer prix-fixe menus designed to show off the diversity of Latin cuisine and culture. With food prices ranging from $3 to $45, nearly anyone can participate in this dining-out celebration.

Diners from Katy to Channelview, and from Spring to the heart of Houston, will have options to choose from. Guests can get a taste of El Salvador when visiting Gloria’s Latin Cuisine locations, or take their palate to Argentina via 5411 Empanadas, which has selections to satisfy vegans, meat-eaters and dessert lovers alike.

Guadalupana owners, Trancito and Julie Dias, keep the offerings authentic with mole de Puebla and tres leches layered with fresh fruit. Peruvian native Belen Bailey of Sweets by Belen loves to shake things up with her French macarons based on tropical drinks such as piña coladas and mojitos. The Latin Restaurant Weeks sampler box even comes complete with a mini tequila bottle. John and Veronica Avila’s Henderson and Kane, on the other hand, is clearly Texas-influenced, as evidenced by the barbecue and housemade sausages.

Other Latin flavors represented include Venezuelan, Colombian, Brazilian, Latin fusion and Spanish. The nearly 70 listings of participating businesses can be found at the Latin Restaurant Weeks website.

Your participation goes towards a great cause. Latin Restaurant Weeks is partnering with Feed the Soul Foundation. Last year they awarded Cochinita & Co., Gusto Gourmet, Sweets By Belen and 30 more businesses $10,000 grants from the partnership. In addition, Feed the Soul helped connect participants to resources that could solve their problems during this difficult time in our industry’s history–whether it was money, advice or mentorship opportunities. The goal of the foundation is to help LGBTQIA+, seniors, veterans or formerly incarcerated individuals among others to grow their culinary businesses by equipping them with support from successful mentors.

When it comes to Latin food, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a fan of fiery spices or prefer your food on the milder side, there’s something out there that will suit your taste buds. What’s more, by supporting Latin Restaurants Weeks, you are contributing to a strong diverse local economy. Delicious authentic Latin food is waiting for you all across greater Houston.  We can’t think of a better way to plan a food adventure this June.
