Rainbow Lodge dessert

Editor’s Note: Last updated 4/24/20, 5:38 p.m. Restaurant and bar owners can email us for a form to enter their information. Please note that we have a very large backlog of restaurants wanting to be added, and limited staff, so some patience is required.

Important update: On March 20, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a waiver allowing restaurants with the proper licenses to deliver alcoholic beverages. TABC media relations officer Chris Porter clarified this rule, saying “The Governor’s waiver allows to-go sales of alcoholic beverages in their manufacturer-sealed containers only.” The TABC notice on this issue is available online. Porter added, “As before, locations with a Wine and Beer Retailer’s Permit can continue to sell growlers to-go as they did previously.

Update, 3/17/20, 9:59 a.m.: Now that the City of Houston and Harris County have ordered bars to close and restaurants to suspend dining, many area food establishments are either temporarily closing or switching to takeout, delivery and/or curbside pick up. This list is far from comprehensive and reflects those restaurants we currently know about. With 1000s of eateries in the area, it will be impossible to include all of those who are adapting to this new and very fluid situation. So if you don’t see one of your favorites on this list, please contact them or check their social media.

The times, they are a changin‘ and no one knows when we’re getting back to life as we knew it. With the continuing spread of COVID-19, the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) is currently advising against gatherings of 50 10 or more. That means that bars and restaurant dining rooms have been ordered to close, despite the great efforts many owners made to ensure the whole process is as safe as possible, including removing tables to increase the distance between diners and sanitizing frequently.

Now, restaurant owners have no revenue source other than to-go and delivery orders. The good news is that customers can still enjoy professionally prepared food without feeling like they are at risk (or putting someone else at risk).

A suggestion: to get maximum dollars to the restaurant and save yourself delivery fees, the best way to order is to call it in and then go pick it up. Many are even offering curbside delivery and will bring it straight to your car. (The exception is if the restaurant is using its own employees for delivery, in which case, delivery is helping keep them employed. If that’s the case — don’t forget to tip since they’re not waiting tables right now!) That said, using a third-party delivery service is better than nothing.

This is a crushingly difficult time for the restaurant and bar industry, and every dollar counts. Sufficient support from customers means these places will still be here when COVID-19 is just an ugly memory. Here are the restaurants making changes, and for our readers’ convenience, the list is organized by neighborhood.

Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille, 6700 Woodlands Parkway, (281) 362-0569: The Houston-grown steakhouse chain has a lot to offer at this time, so strap in.  It’s open for phone orders and curbside pickup from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The menu is online. An extra day and extended hours have been added for the famous pork chop lunch. The three-bone chop along with whipped potatoes and applesauce is available to go for only $16 on both Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Add an extra individual side for $5.) From 4 to 9 p.m. on Sundays, there’s a three-course riff on the pork chop meal, too, that adds a salad and dessert. All week long, there’s a $29, two-course lunch menu (entrée plus the diner’s choice of salad, side or dessert) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Another new addition that is good for a hearty dinner at home is the $32 Heat & Eat meal: a 16-ounce Caramelized Prime Rib topped with Perry’s signature steak butter and whipped potatoes. Add a packaged wedge salad for an additional $7. A 15% gratuity is automatically included to care for the staff. As if all that wasn’t enough to choose from, there’s also a three-course dinner for $45 and a four-course for $50. To drink alongside your food order, check out the new $45 cocktail kits that make six drinks each, such as the Jameson Mocha Old Fashioned or Smoky Rita. You can also check out the half-off deal on Perry’s Reserve Wines, or take 25% off any bottle in inventory. During “Social Distancing Hour” between 3 and 7 p.m., take half-off classic bar bites such as Colossal Shrimp Cocktail, Beef & Blue and Pork Chop Bites. Finally, a $125 gift card purchase snags a $25 bonus. As far as which deal to choose first: there are worse decisions to have to make.
