Houston Restaurant & Store Celebrates Autumn With a Dinner Series

Henderson & Kane

Henderson & Kane General Store, located at 715 Henderson in Houston’s historic Old Sixth Ward, is kicking off the holiday season with its Seasonal Smoke Sessions dinner series. Each event will feature a themed multi-course dinner experience with beverage pairings and showcases the importance of supporting local chefs, farmers, ranchers and other producers. Anyone who’s been in Henderson & Kane, which was established in 2018 by proprietors Veronica and John Avila, can see that same mission in the products on the shelves and in the dishes made onsite daily.

Tickets for each dinner are now on sale and available for purchase through the website. Menus are subject to change according to availability. The events are for patrons 21 years of age and older.

Dia de los Muertos Dinner

The first event in the series honors the Day of the Dead with a four-course dinner with beverage pairings starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 28. It is taking place on the back patio and is described as “a chance to come together, celebrate life, and remember those who are no longer with us in a meaningful and beautiful way.” Guests are encouraged to bring a photograph of a loved one who has passed away to rejoice in their life.

The menu includes an hors d’oeuvre of cucumber and peanuts, followed by butternut squash with crispy sage leaf, goat’s milk crema from The Dapper Goat Dairy and salsa macha from Cochinita & Co., a deconstructed tamal in Chile Colorado sauce topped with smoked pork, Mole Negro with Turkey, and Abuelita’s Sheet Cake with SweetCup Mazapan Gelato for dessert. Each course is paired with flavorful Mexican refreshments such as Michelada Verde, Spicy Michelada from La Gran Chelada, sangría, Maracuya Agua Fresca from Amanecer Co. and Hibiscus Elderberry Agua Fresca from Cochinita & Co. The second event takes place on November 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. This event includes wine pairings from William Chris Vineyards (TBD). It begins with roasted acorn squash served with cornbread and sweet pepper jam followed by a Texas-style holiday feast that includes smoked turkey breast, smoked brisket, sautéed green beans, mashed potatoes with smoked tallow gravy, boudin stuffing and fresh cranberry sauce. Dinner is capped with Texas bourbon pecan pie and sweet potato pie with a gingersnap crust along with coffee and tea service. Go online and use code FRIENDSGIVING before October 28 for $10 off the ticket price.

Winter “Soulstice” Soirée

The third and final event in the series takes place under the moon and stars at a special outdoor venue. It’s located less than two miles away from Henderson & Kane and will be disclosed upon ticket purchase. The winter solstice festivities start at sunset (5:27 p.m.) on Thursday, December 21st. DJ FXBOX will be onsite with some groovy soul tunes to heighten the experience, and cocktail pairings will be provided by Andalusia Whiskey Co. market manager, and Houston Food Finder contributor, Mario-Sebastian Berry. (Disclosure: that’s me, the author of this article.)

The tentative menu begins with light bites such as roasted spiced acorn squash dressed with dried sage and brown butter, and Pulled Pork Bruschetta, followed by soul-warming green chile pork stew, blackened shrimp with smoked Gouda grits, and a seasonal tamal. Each course is paired with a unique cocktail tailored for the occasion, made with Andalusia’s line-up of single malt and Texas Brandy along with rare, tasting room-only releases. Roasted s’mores and café de olla will be served for dessert. Go online for tickets.
