El Big Bad in Downtown Houston Hosts First-Ever Drag Brunch
On February 11, downtown Houston Tex-Mex and tequila spot El Big Bad at 419 Travis is hosting its first-ever drag brunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the show starting at noon. The drag queens performing — all from the Houston area — are Keymiah Dupree, Teresa LaRue, Alexye’us Paris and Muffy Vanderbilt III. Miss Gay America 2024 winner Dessie Love-Blake will serve as mistress of ceremonies. Seating for the event is limited, so be sure to make a reservation via the restaurant’s website if you want to guarantee a table.
“Chelseana [Sharma — co-owner of El Big Bad] reached out to me and she said she would love to have drag be part of their culture at El Big Bad,” says Love-Blake. “My favorite food is Tex-Mex, so it really worked out. We got together, we had a little meeting, we saw her space, and we decided to start with brunch. Let’s see how this Sunday brunch goes. If we can fill this up and do a great job, then maybe we can go to two brunches and then maybe a Saturday dinner show.”
Although El Big Bad has always been a supporter of Houston’s LGBTQIAP+ community and offers annual Pride Month specials, this is its first foray into hosting the city’s vibrant, active and thriving drag scene. Love-Blake promises to fill all 10,000 square feet of the historic space with “something big and grand and fabulous and over the top, with some feathers and larger-than-life costumes.”
To commemorate the foray into providing drag entertainment, El Big Bad chef Esteban has crafted a special menu of Tex-Mex brunch fare such as chilaquiles and huevos rancheros, as well as other classics like chicken and waffles. Sip on mimosas, margaritas made with one of the restaurant’s 30 infused tequilas, or treat yourself to a Mexican Candy Shot, which mixes jalapeño-infused tequila and watermelon liqueur with fresh-squeezed lemon and lime juices in a glass rimmed with Tajin and chili. To-go margaritas and infused tequila shots are available for designated drivers or diners hoping to try more of the available infusions than can reasonably fit in one afternoon.
Love-Blake and her crew hope to return to El Big Bad soon for more drag spectaculars, and encourages Houstonians to follow along with the event and future news at her Instagram and Facebook, as well as the venue’s Instagram and Facebook as well. The social media accounts also offer previews of some of the infusions that El Big Bad will have on hand for brunch. Love-Blake points out for Houstonians who want to attend the big bash but can’t make it on February 11, creating demand via social media will go a long way towards making future events possible.
“We’re going to make this a success,” Love-Blake says. “We’re going to have a great show.”
