Virtually everyone can relate to that annoying feeling when Uber rides and airline tickets reflect a price surge during popular hours. This summer, South African restaurants Peli Peli Kitchen (9090 Katy Freeway) and Peli Deli (808 Travis) seek to offer the opposite experience: a 20-percent discount to diners who visit during the traditionally quiet hours of 1 to 6 p.m. The automatic discount that is good towards everything except alcohol, which means guests can nosh on pork belly breakfast tacos and boerewors pretzel dogs at the deli, or signature fried Peri-Peri chicken at the kitchen while saving a few bucks. (Hey, if you decide to put the savings towards a beer or a glass of South African wine, who’s going to judge?)

Update, 6/22/2017, 2:30 p.m.: A diner asked if the special is for dine-in only. Nguyen responded that it applies to all orders during the stated hours, including carryout. In addition, Peli Peli Kitchen is open seven days a week, so the special is good on the weekends there as well. (Peli Deli operates Mondays through Fridays.)

The deal runs from June through August, but partner Thomas Nguyen says if enough diners take advantage, he will consider extending the offer. He says he’s never seen this kind of promotion at a restaurant and always wanted to give it a go, adding that “It may be the dumbest idea ever, but it’s worth trying because no one is ever going to get mad about getting a discount.”

Nguyen is also quick to clarify that, unlike the price surges in other industries, the regular prices remain the same and do not increase. This is simply an incentive during traditionally slow business hours.

Aside from the financial perk—and depending on the popularity of the promotion—diners may also enjoy a quieter atmosphere than if they visited during the traditional lunch and dinner hours. By the way, large orders (hint: office group lunches) are welcomed and encouraged.

It is important to note that the promotion is available only at Peli Peli Kitchen and Peli Deli and not at the swankier Peli Peli Galleria or Peli Peli Vintage Park locations, though this could possibly change based on the success at the casual concepts.
