Roma’s Grassy Light Virtual Wine Tasting

April 22 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

We have another great winery lined up for this week’s dinner: the Orsolani winery with winemaker Gianluigi Orsolani, producer of some of our favorite Erbaluce, a white grape grown exclusively in a small area in northern Piedmont.

No one really knows the origin of the name Erbaluce but it’s believed it comes from albaluce, meaning “white light.” That’s because the grape berries are nearly transparent when you hold them up to the sunlight. We like to translate the grape name as “grassy light” (erba means grass and luce means light) because it reminds us of the bright, fresh, and slightly herbaceous aromas and flavors of this amazing grape variety.

Caluso, the township where Gianluigi grows his grapes, is about an hour and a half by car (depending on how fast you drive) from the Matterhorn in Switzerland. The soils where his vineyards are located are made up of pebbles and rocks from ancient melting glaciers. They are ideal for producing white wines with great balance and minerality. And the altitude and cool weather of this far-north area allows the grapes to ripen slowly and thus achieve a richness in flavor that their lower altitude counterparts struggle to achieve.

Very little Erbaluce is grown today but it’s beginning to make a splash in hipster wine circles. We feel extremely fortunate to have Gianluigi joining us. His family is one of the oldest in the region and he represents the fourth generation in his family to make these extraordinary wines. They were making them long before any hipsters noticed!
