Popular & Nerdy Neil’s Bahr Announces Closure and Relocation at End of Month

Rolling with the punches is a trait successful bar operators know all too well, whether the hits from fluctuating food and beverage trends, or changing neighborhoods and evolving demographics. For Neil’s Bahr in EaDo, located at 2006 Walker, a massive, multi-billion dollar overhaul of the freeway system is forcing the team to press reset on their current space while simultaneously holding select + start on a new location close by.

When Neil’s Bahr opened over a decade ago, it filled a gap in the Downtown Houston bar  scene by catering to “nerds”: gamers, cosplayers, comic fans, sci-fi geeks, punks, goths and others with outside-the-mainstream interests. By creating an inclusive alternative to the ubiquitous sports bar concept, which at the time dominated the EaDo drinking scene, Neil’s Bahr built a fiercely loyal following. It became the go-to, post-event hang for nerdy, “alt” patrons attending concerts and events at nearby venues such as the George R. Brown Convention Center (it’s an especially beloved hangout during pop-culture convention Comicpalooza, which is happening again soon), Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, Shell Energy Stadium or Warehouse Live (which has since moved to Midtown).

In short, it’s been an ideal space for anyone who didn’t want to be made fun of, get hit on, risk being roofied, or mansplained to by douchey sports-bar dude-bros. Neil’s Bahr’s offerings have included unique, one-off events, pop-ups and late-night food.

More than a decade after the I-45 expansion project first began displacing local businesses in the area, and a full seven months after an October 24 Facebook post announced the impending relocation, the Walker location of Neil’s Bahr is facing its final boss as it plans to shutter on Saturday, May 31. Just a few days later, Neil’s will reopen in its new location at 3409 McKinney on Tuesday, June 3 now that the buildout is complete, and the owners have occupancy permits in-hand.

“The vision for the new Neil’s is to be as close to the original as possible while having better amenities and seating for customers, as well as bringing back our weekly events… an old school Neil’s Bahr mentality that’s more involved with its base.“ said owner Neil Fernandez on Facebook. Citing a “disintegrating property” at the old location, the new property will offer give patrons and regulars an even better hangout by “improving aspects we couldn’t work on before.”

“The move is really bittersweet,” said general manager Kristen Farmer. “The highway expansion is displacing so many small businesses and is going to shift the dynamic of East downtown. I’m excited to grow with the area and introduce ourselves to new people that avoided the previous location due to parking and traffic issues. I’m also excited to show off Neil’s, and my staff’s and my own hard work, to our regulars that we consider family. Yes — we will finally have a better parking situation!”

New-ish bartender, Jason Ezra Garcia also shared some thoughts about Neil’s Bahr and the upcoming transition. “What I love about Neil’s is that you can come as you are — your true self — and make friends with anyone. It’s a melting pot for sports fans, console gamers, board gamers and everything in between. I am really excited for the move, not only because I’ve been a patron since the beginning, but more so now as a new employee. It is a new era for Neil’s Bahr, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Hopefully, the owners won’t change the vintage game consoles connected to era-correct crt monitors, the best ping pong table in Houston, “The Simpsons” playing on repeat behind the bar, or the ‘pay what you want’ comic book library. Keep an eye on its social media pages for a slew of final-week festivities at the Walker location, in addition to grand-opening events at the McKinney outpost. In the words of Han Solo, “Chewie, we’re home.”
