De Fortune, an upscale cocktail lounge, is set to debut in late 2024 in the Regent Square mixed-use development at 3515 West Dallas. The bar joins Underbelly Hospitality’s Georgia James steakhouse, Flight Club social darts emporium and Flower & Cream artisan ice cream shop. The forthcoming bar aims to deliver a luxurious, globally inspired, craft cocktail experience.

De Fortune is the first concept from the newly formed MAKE Investments hospitality group founded by Mayur Desai, an entrepreneur with a background in the hospitality industry, along with Atik Mistry, Kinjal Desai and Emish Patel. MAKE represents the first letter in each of their first names, and the partners describe themselves as “avid cocktail connoisseurs”. They began plans for the bar over two years ago while sharing libations.

“We wanted to create something unique, upscale and elegant on a level not seen in Houston nightlife,” said Desai, adding that “We envision a hospitality-first experience that will connect with a selective local and visiting clientele who appreciate great design, anticipatory service, cocktails that wow, plus an environment that is upbeat while still allowing for guests to easily chat across the table.”

De Fortune, which means “makeshift” or “chance” in French, was chosen to express the partners’ desire to “keep things fresh with regular updates reflective of seasonal ingredients. New drink formats and recipes, employing seasonal ingredients, exotic spices and a vast inventory of global spirits, will keep the bar humming at the antithesis of “makeshift” — a dependably modern and enduring immersion into the most luxurious possibilities of the cocktail experience.”

When it opens later this year, it will be Regent Square’s first craft cocktail-focused bar, and it will also offer a limited menu of small bites and snacks. It takes cues from lauded international bars such as The Clumsies in Athens, Greece and Atlas Bar in Singapore both of which have spots on The World’s 50 Best Bars list. It’s an ambitious enterprise, but Houston is no stranger to world-class bars and hospitality.

The partners are working with Unfiltered Hospitality, a Miami-based beverage consultancy, to design a beverage menu with international appeal, as well as local Gin Design Group to turn the 1,614-square-foot space into a chic and intimate bar full of posh, moody interiors. Gin Design is responsible for the look of numerous Houston restaurants, including Eunice in Upper Kirby, Jūn in the Heights, MaKiin in River Oaks and The Lymbar in Midtown. Early renderings of De Fortune Depict a look awash in marble surfaces that mixes art deco elements with clean, geometric lines.

While the menu is still in development, if De Fortune lives up to its lofty aspirations then it is sure to be a welcome addition to Houston’s world-class bar scene and shine a spotlight on the burgeoning Allen Parkway corridor.
