New Restaurant Specializing in All-Day Breakfast Now Open In Memorial City

The original Flying Biscuit Café started in Atlanta in 1993 and sold out of its namesake dish on the first day. Since then it’s grown to five states as a franchise operation. The company says that each location makes about 5,000 biscuits a day.

Its first Texas location was in Richardson and it’s now opened a second, this time in Houston at 12389 Kingsride near Memorial City Hospital in the former Gugliani’s space. Brent Fuller, brand leader for the Atlanta-based chain, says it’s off to a promising start. “It’s been really good,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of repeat customers and our sales have been strong. This is a great area for us.”

Fuller said the restaurant’s shrimp and grits are popular with Houston diners, as is the Heavenly French Toast, which is served with raspberry sauce and honey cream. In addition its Breakfast All Day menu, the Flying Biscuit offers a lighter take on comfort-food favorites, often swapping in poultry in dishes traditionally made with beef. “We like to do Southern comfort food with a twist,” said Fuller. “Our chorizo hash is made with chicken chorizo, so it’s less oily and feels a little lighter.” “Pot roast” is made with turkey, slow roasted and hand pulled, then served with gravy, and the Not Your Mama’s Pimento Cheese Sandwich is made with bacon, lettuce and tomato.

The company’s expansion into Houston is due in large part to Javier Gomez, who owns and runs the Memorial City location. He started visiting The Flying Biscuit when he was a student in Atlanta.

“I have family in Houston and am familiar with the city,” said Gomez. “I knew about The Flying Biscuit before it was a franchise during my training at Emory. When I heard it was expanding to Texas, I was interested in bringing the Flying Biscuit to the Houston market since there is nothing like it.”

Gomez said he’s confident Houstonians will embrace the concept and he’s looking forward to the Flying Biscuit taking an active part in the community.

“We could not be more excited to bring the Flying Biscuit’s unique flavors to Memorial City,” he said in a press release announcing the Houston opening. “We think our delicious food and welcoming atmosphere will be a great fit and we hope to become a staple in the Memorial City community. We have joined the Houston Chamber of Commerce and plan to partner with local institutions and organizations whenever we can. We will also be at events like Coffee and Cars each month.”

The restaurant is slated to open a second Houston spot in Midtown late next year.

The Flying Biscuit Café is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to  4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
