While Thanksgiving is a great time to gather with family and friends and share gratitude, there’s no doubt some folks find the prep work and cooking exhausting. (A mountain of dirty dishes? No thanks.) Fortunately, restaurants across the Bayou City can rescue overworked hosts and hostesses with dinners-to-go, thus eliminating much of the stress. Note that some locations have early order deadlines, so get thee to thy turkey, stat!
Don’t Forget the Drinks
Camerata at Paulie’s, 1834 Westheimer: Camerata at Paulie’s hosts its annual holiday retail sale on November 18 from 2 to 6 p.m. It’s a great time to stock up on wine for Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season. The event offers time for guests to sample wines from producers around the world and score some serious deals. For those who feel insecure about their wine knowledge, don’t worry; distributors and importers will be on hand to talk about their wines and help make selections.
Sonoma Wine Bar and Restaurant, 801 Studewood: “What wines do we serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” Sonoma has the answer. Head over on November 18 from 3 to 6 p.m. for a come-and-go wine tasting to sample up to 50 options for holiday pairing. There’s a $25 tasting fee, which is waived with the purchase of a mixed case.
Thanksgiving Takeout in Houston by Neighborhood
The Dunlavy, 3422 Allen Parkway: The Dunlavy has traditional and vegan Thanksgiving dinners. The turkeys are sourced from Whitehurst Heritage Farms and come with challah bread herbed stuffing, Wild Texas Mushroom and Green Bean Casserole, buttery mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, turkey gravy, cranberry compote and a dozen Parker House rolls. Dinner costs $250 and serves between eight and 10 people. The vegan dinner is butternut squash with wild rice herb stuffing, Texas Wild Mushroom Gravy, Celery Root Mashed Potatoes, Texas autumn roasted vegetables, organic kale with chimichurri, cranberry pear compote, sourdough boule and a mini vegan pumpkin pie. The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation, 2704 Navigation: Choose a la carte tamales to bring a Mexican spin to the Thanksgiving table. The chicken with Tomatillo Cream Sauce are $50 for a dozen or $25 for half-dozen, beef with beef gravy are $62 for a dozen or $31 for a half-dozen and pork wrapped in a banana leaf with beef gravy are $62 for a dozen or $31 for a half-dozen. Guests can make a full meal by adding Mexican rice or refried beans for $5 per pint or $8 per quart. Orders require 24 hours notice and must be picked up on Wednesday, November 21 between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Caracol, 2200 Post Oak: Choose from an extensive selection of executive chef-owner Hugo Ortega’s take on traditional turkey and trimmings. Select from the Family Feast for $225, which serves 10 to 12 people or a Couple’s Feast for $95. Both options include a pineapple and habañero spiral ham (the feast comes with a whole ham while the couple’s selection has slices to serve two), coal-roasted sweet potatoes made with condensed milk, jalapeño cornbread, charred Brussels sprouts, roasted red bliss potatoes and rajas, sweet cranberry and spicy jalapeño relish and tamal Azteca tortilla casserole. For dessert, select from pumpkin and cajeta pie, tres leches cake or tomatillo marmalade cheesecake. The Junior League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks: This civic organization has a classic Thanksgiving menu available a la carte. Selections include a 22-pound roasted turkey ($75); Bacon, Sour Cream and Corn Casserole ($30), Cheesy Broccoli Rice Casserole ($30), mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar and pecans ($32.50) and Cranberry-Orange Relish ($16). Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen, 2327 Post Oak: Order a mishmosh of American and Eastern European flavors to with the Kenny & Ziggy’s Thanksgiving to-go meal. It costs $275 and feeds between 10 and 12 people. Dinner includes a 16-pound turkey, Wild Mushroom and Chestnut Stuffing, housemade gravy, Cranberry-Pineapple Relish and two additional sides. The choices are String Beans Amandine; Yukon Smashed Potatoes; whipped or roasted sweet potatoes; Roasted Garlic and Schmaltzed potatoes; mini potato or sweet potato pancakes; Spinach, Onion and Leek Kugel; Yucatan Corn Pudding; and Jean’s Carrot Soufflé or Kasha Varnishkas (kasha with noodles). Ouisie’s Table, 3939 San Felipe: The River Oaks stalwart is ideal for large numbers of guests. Dinner options include a Garlic-and-Pepper-Crusted Prime Rib of Beef dinner that serves between 15 and 20 people for $350 and a honey-glazed ham meal that serves between 20 and 25 for $175. Both come with a choice of two sides, and guests can select from green beans, Lobster-Mashed Potatoes, Cinnamon-Ginger Sweet Potatoes, cranberry sauce, mixed grilled vegetables, macaroni and cheese, wild rice with shallots or a Stilton salad. Piatto Ristorante 4925 W. Alabama: The Carrabba Family-owned Italian spot has a traditional Thanksgiving to-go meal that includes roasted turkey, cornbread dressing, sweet potato souffle, green beans and artichoke hearts, cranberry orange relish and rolls. But there’s also (natch) an Italian option with lasagna, chicken Milanese (breaded chicken breasts with diced tomato and basil), Italian sausage and peppers, garlic mashed potatoes, Italian green beans, Johnny’s House Salad and dinner rolls. Pricing for six people for either dinner is $192; enough for 12 people is $360. Orders must be placed by Tuesday, Nov. 20. Yauatcha, 5045 Westheimer: The elegant-modern Chinese dim sum teahouse located within “the jewelbox” building at The Galleria mall is offering its typically petite-sized desserts in a large format for takeaway orders. The Pecan Tart Entremet is reminiscent of a pecan pie and bursts with crunchy pecans, rich dulce de leche, and vanilla cremeux. It costs $50 and serves eight to 10 people. Central Market, 3815 Westheimer: Employees are manning the holiday hotline for customers who want maximum Thanksgiving options with minimal fuss. Seven different full dinner options with entrées and sides are available and serve two to eight people. Main courses include oven-roasted turkey, smoked ham with apricot-ginger glaze, oak-smoked garlic and pepper rib eye and a vegetarian dinner for two. All meals are fully cooked and only require reheating. Place orders online and the store advises that guests do so by Nov. 18. Kiran’s 2925 Richmond brings a touch of chef Kiran Verma’s signature Indian cuisine to the traditional Thanksgiving offerings, with a tamarind-glazed tandoori turkey dinner to serve 10 people. The 14- to 16-pound bird is accompanied by blood orange cranberry sauce; brioche stuffing with toasted walnuts, chicken keema and wild mushrooms; white wine gravy; three choices from green beans almandine, braised cabbage and Brussels sprouts, Aloo Methi (red new potatoes with fenugreek) or apricot and paneer biryani; and a choice of two desserts that include pumpkin or pecan pie or Cheesecake with fresh strawberries or carrot cake with ginger cream cheese icing. Feges BBQ, 3 Greenway Plaza: For a barbecue-themed dinner, choose from multiple options for Thanksgiving including a three-and-a-half pound turkey breast ($50), pork ribs ($40 for a full rack and $20 for a half pound) and a whole brisket ($130). Side options include braised collard greens, Sweet Potato and Banana Mashers, cornbread stuffing and macaroni and cheese. However, do note the early deadline! Orders must be placed online no later than November 14. Pick up days are Monday, November 19 through Wednesday, November 21 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Heights/Washington Avenue/Shady Acres
B&B Butchers, 1814 Washington: Order a roasted prime rib dinner that comes with au jus, pommes purée and Yorkshire pudding that feeds 10 to 12 for $550 or five to seven for $300. Augment with traditional sides such as cornbread and sausage stuffing, candied yams, Brussels sprouts or cranberry sauce. Each side serves four for $60, six for $90 or eight for $110. A traditional turkey is also available for $6 per pound. There are pumpkin, apple crumb, key lime and pecan pies for $35 each. Harold’s Restaurant and Tap Room, 350 W. 19: Grab dinner in the Heights with a roasted turkey spread for six for $119.85. In addition to the turkey, the dinner comes with cornbread dressing, pan gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans and homemade cranberry sauce. Guests can add a sweet potato pie or Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie for an additional $30. Place orders online or by calling (713) 360-6204. Laurenzo’s, 4412 Washington: Order prime rib dinners for eight to 12 people for $274.99 or 12 to 24 people for $499. Each dinner comes with 1881 Hereford prime rib, housemade au jus, creamy horseradish sauce, fresh bread, and a choice of sides that includes creamed corn, garlic mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and buttered peas. Rainbow Lodge, 2011 Ella: There are multiple a la carte options to create a custom dinner from Rainbow Lodge. The full menu is online with options like a 16-pound turkey and gravy that serves six to eight people for $89, a roasted beef tenderloin for $150, the lodge’s signature Smoked Duck Gumbo for $16 a quart and a selection of sides for $3.50 per person such as a roasted autumn vegetable mix, green beans with shallots, and wild mushroom risotto (minimum order is for four people). Plan well-ahead for extra special options like pheasant, goose, or a whole roasted suckling pig as these orders may take up to a week to fulfill.
Chez Nous, 217 S. Avenue G: The Thanksgiving dinner to-go at Chez Nous serves between 10 and 12 people. The $350 gourmet package includes a slow-roasted apple cider and sage brined organic turkey; cornbread stuffing with sweet potatoes, cranberries and toasted Texas pecans; green beans with shallots, garlic and herb butter; roasted carrots; a dozen dinner rolls; and a choice of Spiced Pumpkin Cheesecake, Walnut Tarte or Chocolate Bourbon Soufflé Cake. Jonathan’s The Rub, 9061 Gaylord: This is the seventh year that Jonathan’s The Rub has offered a Thanksgiving to-go menu and it includes a variety of a la carte selections. The fried turkey ($85) is brined for 48 hours in Jonathan’s special spice rub. To accompany it, guests may select from Sourdough and Cornbread Stuffing, cranberry sauce, candied yams and green bean casserole ($80 each for a full pan, $45 each for a half-pan, $15 each for a quart and $10 each for a pint). Desserts are $40 and include tres leches, pecan pie, Nutella cheesecake and chocolate cream pie. Email the restaurant by November 19 to place orders. Underbelly Hospitality: The catering-only arm of Chris Shepherd’s restaurants offers several a la carte options that can be picked up and reheated. The house-smoked and brined turkey is $40 for a four-pound breast and Day After Thanksgiving Gumbo is $50 a gallon. Sides include Brussels sprouts, Cornbread Custard, Bacon-Sausage Creamed Greens and Sweet Potato au Gratin that are $35 each. Killen’s Barbecue, 3613 E Broadway, Pearland: Indulge in a limited number of smoked turkeys available for $70 and pair them with an array of side dishes including baked beans, pinto beans, mac ’n cheese, creamed corn, coleslaw, potato salad, green beans and collard greens for $9 per quart. Ditch the turkey altogether and order Killen’s smoked brisket for $95. To place an order, email the restaurant at least 48 hours in advance. Killen’s will be open for order pick up on Tuesday, November 20 and Wednesday, November 21 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Robard’s Steakhouse, 2301 Millbend: This traditional Thanksgiving dinner serves four, eight or 12 people. The to-go dinner includes Citrus-Brined Roast Turkey, Kale and Quinoa Salad, Poblano Cornbread Stuffing, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, green beans almondine, roasted rainbow carrots in a honey glaze and a choice of apple, pecan or pumpkin pie. The Texas favorite has a feast that serves between six and eight people and includes a mesquite-smoked turkey, Sausage and Pecan Bread Stuffing, potatoes au gratin, Sweet Potato Gratin with Pecan Streusel, Smoked Duck Collard Greens, green bean casserole, creamed corn, roasted cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, corn muffins and the company’s signature Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie.
