Low-Cost Ways To Treat Mom Right For Mother’s Day In Houston

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13. Even though many moms say they don’t need anything (and even actually mean it) they still deserve appreciation. Most importantly, they deserve their children’s time, especially if they’ve all grown up and flown the nest. The greatest joy for a mom is spending precious moments and creating memories with her kids. In other words, there are ways to express your love on Mother’s Day that won’t break the bank. Here are some fun, budget friendly ways to celebrate that special lady in your life.

Celebrate Early
Brennan’s of Houston, 3300 Smith, has two fabulous mom-tastic events the week leading up to Mother’s Day for just $25. On May 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Brennan’s monthly wine tasting will focus on the famed Loire Valley in a fun and informative setting that includes light bites. Jazz things up on May 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Courtyard Social featuring Shrimp Etouffee and two handcrafted cocktails. Reservations for both events can be made online or by calling (713) 522-9711.

Take Her Out to a Ball Game
Many moms love sports and right now the whole city loves the Houston Astros. Watch them take on the Texas Rangers May 11 through 13 during home games at Minute Maid Park, 501 Crawford. Tickets start at $21 and Mother’s Day promotional items will be handed out all weekend. Treat mom to one of this year’s new menu items such as the BBQ Funnel Cake, Haute Dog or the Astros Slider Trio. For ticket info visit Astros.com.

Ballet in the Park
The Houston Ballet is performing Don Quixote at the Miller Outdoor Theatre, located at 6000 Hermann Park May 11 through 13. Pick up some charcuterie or a few Antone’s Po’Boys and dine al fresco on the hill. Alcohol is permitted but it must be in a non-glass container. (Believe it or not, these days there are boxed wines of very good quality.) All shows are free and tickets for reserved, covered seating are available at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office on performance days from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (The limit is four per person as long as tickets are still available.)

Happy Hour Savings
Let mom sleep in on Sunday and celebrate later that day during happy hour. Bollo Woodfired Pizza at 2202 West Alabama, has specials every day from 4 to 7 p.m. Share a crispy pizza and a bottle of wine (or pitcher of beer) for $19. Another place with happy hour every day of the week is South Bank Seafood Bar at 702 West Dallas with specials from 4 to 7 p.m. Beer and bites are $5, classic cocktails are $6 and glasses of frosé are $7. Both places have patios, which will be great if the weather is nice on Mother’s Day.

The cost includes two beverages (mimosa, sangria, beer or sparkling wine), Eggs Benedict, quiche, eggs, bacon, sides and desserts. Spend the Day on the Range
Moms get to shoot and eat for free at Saddle River Range, located at 4280 FM 1488. Shower Her with Sweets
A Little Black Box of 8-piece Signature chocolates from Cacao & Cardamom Chocolatier  at 5000 Westheimer is only $20. These handcrafted chocolates are edible works of art almost as beautiful as mom. The box includes guava tamarind, pineapple fennel, cardamom rose and more. Another idea: pick up a dozen fresh fruit kolaches from Koala Kolache at 14502 Spring Cypress for around $20. The delicious pastries are available in over five different fruit flavors as well as cream cheese, Nutella and poppy seed. Finally, who doesn’t love cookies? Warm, made-to-order chocolate chip pecan cookies are available from Grand Lux Cafe at 5000 Westheimer for $8.95 per dozen.

Head to the Beach
Pack the car with floppy hats, sunscreen and a cooler full of mom’s favorite snacks and head to Galveston. After a day of sun and surf, take a stroll down The Strand or rent a surrey bike for some family fun along the seawall. End the day by watching the sunset from the Bolivar Ferry. You might even spy a dolphin or two dancing in the sea spray. Be sure to watch out for the seagulls, otherwise mom might come home with more than just memories.

Editor’s Note: As of publication time, Antone’s Famous Po’ Boys and Bollo Woodfired Pizza are Houston Food Finder sponsors. Cacao & Cardamom is a recent sponsor.
