Tropical breezes are calling all the way from Southern Goods at 632 West 19th this Sunday as they host a Hawaiian lūʻau that features eats and sips inspired by island fare. The lūʻau kicks off at noon with an a la carte menu that can be enjoyed inside or on the restaurant’s spacious covered patio.

The non-ticketed event is open to all, though guests are encouraged to come early before the food runs out. Highlights will include two whole roasted pigs from The Barry Farm. As a riff on the traditional preparation, one is being prepared in a hot tub by chef Lyle Bento while pit master Patrick Feges will put his smoky touch on the second.

Guests can also order a small, whole roasted fish plus sides of poke, taro chips, and the macaroni salad that’s so ubiquitous on plate lunches in Hawaii. A second “festival menu” will include Southern Goods favorites like the double-meat double cheeseburger. Special lūʻau-libations created for the party include The Conch, a playful spin on the classic mai tai.

Entertainment includes live ukelele music from 1 to 3 p.m., Hawaiian and surf rock music—and possibly even dancers.

The event serves dual purposes: a cheerful send off to the staff’s friend Mark Parmley (a longtime chef in Houston whose work has included El Big Bad and Capitol at St. Germaine) before he goes to his annual summer job in Alaska, and a joyful welcome to summer.
